Today we checked out of our Gettysburg campground in a very light rain. We had a drive of just under 5 hours to look forward to and the rain was steadily getting harder.
I felt pretty terrible with my cold symptoms peaking and I actually fell asleep sitting up for part of the time. I woke up when Brock pulled us into a rest area at the West Virginia Welcome Center. Seemed like the distant mountain and valley views would've been really spectacular if the fog/mist would've been lighter, but as it was they were still nice. We did notice that the parking lot looked out over a penitentiary of some kind. Kind of weird for a state's welcome center.
We all ate a cup o' noodles for lunch which don't really deserve a big positive reaction from anyone, but actually hit the spot pretty well when you have a cold.
We left our rest and continued on route to who knows where. We still didn't know where we were going to stay the night, but we were happy that because of our lunch spot we could add the West Virginia sticker to our map.
Our biggest excitement of the day was when we were getting low on gas and the first station that we chose to try off the highway was not really accessible for us. We ended up having to do this crazy backaround maneuver just to get out of there and we still weren't able to get to the pump. We headed a little further down the highway and I used Brock's Gas Buddy app on his phone to determine which station was closest even though it didn't look the easiest on/off. Our gas gauge was just saying LOW now and not telling us the number of miles to empty, but we knew it was less than 20 miles because that is what it had said at last reading. We pulled into a station that was on narrow streets and we were able to fill up. When we tried to be on our way though, it became apparent that there wasn't room for us to pull forward out of the station. A little older lady had pulled up to the pump behind us so I had to go out and ask her to move. :( Then we had to back all the way out, stopping traffic on the narrow streets. It was a little humbling, but we were just thankful to have a full tank of gas to continue our journey.
It was pouring down rain the rest of the drive. We decided to save a few bucks and "camp" at the Walmart just across the border into Ohio. We pulled into town right around 5 pm; not sure how we always seem to do that! The gps directed us right into the mall area using the truck route entrance which was great. We pulled into an area of the parking lot where there were already a couple of semis parked.
Brock called the Walmart and asked if they permitted overnight parking for customers and we received the ok. We went in and grabbed a few necessities along with a few items for a quick dinner that wouldn't create too many dishes given that we had very limited water on board.
We ate our French dips for dinner and turned in.
Welcome to our Adventure...
We packed up the kids, dog and the trailer and headed out for adventure, learning and helping others. During our adventure we will try to update this site as often as possible to keep everyone interested involved in our travels and to keep a journal for ourselves. The plan is to be working, schooling, helping and sharing on the road for a year.
