Brock and Bri and I had very quick campground showers. The pressure was great, but they were the kind with only one knob and the temperature was barely warm bordering on cool.
After some very strong thunder, lightning and rain last night, it was great to see sunny skies this morning, but the air was very hot and heavy.
We arrived at the Camping World which it turns out is only a few miles up the road from us, only to find that the parts area is just getting set up there and isn't open for business until this Friday. Oh well. We got back on the freeway and headed in to Kansas City downtown area to find LEGOLAND. Our google maps navigation was a little crazy as it kept switching lefts and rights and confusing us, but we made it without too much trouble and turned into the parking structure. The height clearance was only 6'5" which is pretty close to the top of the rack on our roof, but the parking attendant waved us through so we went in. Parking is free on the weekends. Woohoo! It was very tight navigating in there so we parked in pretty much the first available spot and that whole level was almost empty. As it turned out, we had parked on the mall side of the street and not the LEGOLAND side and almost nothing was open at the mall at 10 am on Sunday morning, so I guess that's why the parking garage was empty.
We finally got across the street and into line at LEGOLAND Discovery Center. Brock had found a coupon online where you get a free kid ticket with the purchase of an adult so we were able to make it two transactions and use two of those. It was just under $75 for all of us to go in with the discount.
Let me just say that it was fun. The kids had a good time, especially Skylar, I think. It is very cool visually. I think it was a lot smaller than we thought it was going to be and for it being as new as I think it is, several things were surprisingly not in working order. I think it was still worth it, but I would've liked to see the ticket price a little lower for what it was, maybe closer to about 10 bucks per person.
Here's some of what we got to see and do...
Bryn checked her weight in Lego bricks...30,500!! |
One of the two "rides", Kingdom's Quest, a laser shooting game. |
We toured miniland including the Emerald City of Oz complete with a melting minifigure Wicked Witch. "I'm melllllting." |
Merlin's Apprentice ride, you pedal to make it go up while it circles the center point. |
Fun, but one of these two had very squeeeeky pedals! LOL |
Building a car to test or race on the provided ramp tracks. |
Pretty fountains in front of the mall area. Three kids had money to spend in the Lego store on the way out so their minifigure collections have now expanded. |
After LEGOLAND, we headed through downtown and towards our campground, but we had to stop and get milk and a few other items and Sky needed a new pair of tennis shoes because his Velcro won't stay closed on his tennis shoes anymore and that is not good with all the walking we do. ;o)
After the quick shopping trip, we headed back to the trailer. We knew the storm was going to hit in the afternoon and we thought we'd rather be at the trailer and with Heidi. We got several hours of hot sunny weather though before the winds started to pick up and the skies started to get gray and rain started to fall.
That initial thunderstorm cell was very short-lived and passed over us within a matter of a few minutes and the sky lightened up and it was calm again. We started watching the news around 6:30 because we were anticipating the next wave of storms and wanted to see what to expect. It was pretty crazy how accurate the local news was with the tracking. They even put up a little time schedule of when we could expect the storm's line and it was eerily right on. We could watch the storm coming...a big bank of clouds and then lightning and thunder and then the winds and rain...and then it was over.
Here comes some ominous looking clouds. |
We feel so blessed because we saw that tornadoes had touched down in Wichita, where we just left yesterday, and had done some major damage along with hail and some flooding in the downtown area that we just drove through on Friday. Tornadoes also hit Oklahoma City where we were right before Wichita. Tonight, we got some good strong winds and rain, thunder and lightning, but nothing too bad. No hail. No really strong gusts. No trees, or even limbs, down in the park where we are. The thunder and lightning and rain are continuing right now as I write this, but supposedly the major threat is over. I don't anticipate getting a lot of good sleep, but I'm so grateful for God's protection on our family today.
